![]() So, every one of you, stop the evil things you have been doing. 11 So now, tell the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem this: The Lord says, ‘I am preparing to bring disaster on you! I am making plans to punish you. 10 But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it. 9 And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom. 8 But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it. ĥ Then the Lord’s message came to me, 6 “I, the Lord, say: ‘O nation of Israel, can I not deal with you as this potter deals with the clay? In my hands, you, O nation of Israel, are just like the clay in this potter’s hand.’ 7 There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit. 4 Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. I will speak to you further there.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working at his wheel. Let’s spread rumors about him and ignore what he says.”Īn Object Lesson from the Making of Potteryġ8 The Lord said to Jeremiah: 2 “Go down at once to the potter’s house. We don’t need him to teach the word and give us advice and prophecies. ![]() We have plenty of priests and wise men and prophets. They have stumbled off the ancient highwaysġ6 Therefore, their land will become desolate,ġ7 I will scatter my people before their enemiesĪnd in all their trouble I will turn my back on themĪnd refuse to notice their distress.” A Plot against Jeremiahġ8 Then the people said, “Come on, let’s plot a way to stop Jeremiah. We will continue to live as we want to, stubbornly following our own evil desires.”ġ4 Does the snow ever disappear from the mountaintops of Lebanon?ĭo the cold streams flowing from those distant mountains ever run dry?ġ5 But my people are not so reliable, for they have deserted me So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.’”ġ2 But the people replied, “Don’t waste your breath. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am planning disaster for you instead of good. ![]() 9 And if I announce that I will plant and build up a certain nation or kingdom, 10 but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me, I will not bless it as I said I would.ġ1 “Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. 7 If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed, 8 but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned. 4 But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.ĥ Then the Lord gave me this message: 6 “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. He said, 2 “Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” 3 So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. 18 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah.
